New Jersey Hosts Inaugural Meeting of "States for Gun Safety" Coalition

05/9/2018

TRENTON - New Jersey today hosted a first of its kind meeting bringing together key officials from New Jersey and nearby member states of the “States for Gun Safety” coalition to discuss intelligence sharing — with respect to both crime gun intelligence and permitting information. Representatives from New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Delaware participated in a meeting with the New Jersey Governor’s Office, New Jersey State Police, and the Office of the New Jersey Attorney General today to strengthen a collaboration to trace and intercept illegal guns, share information and address the scourge of gun violence in our region.

“Today’s meeting demonstrates the ability of States for Gun Safety members to work together, share information and respond to the gun violence epidemic plaguing our communities,” said Governor Phil Murphy. “While Congress sits idle in the face of mass shootings, we will continue to take action to reduce this form of violence and make our communities safer. I am proud to join my fellow colleagues and invite other states to join us as we fight for gun sense in America.”

While the meetings that took place today were held in private to discuss sensitive information, topics included the NJ ROIC partnership with ATF, and a roundtable discussion regarding protocols and practices for sharing information. As these discussions continue, New Jersey has agreed to take the lead on how best to increase information sharing on gun crime intelligence.

On Friday, April 6, 2018, Governor Murphy signed Executive Order 21, which mandates the publication of information related to guns used in the commission of crimes statewide. Governor Phil Murphy, Attorney General Gurbir S. Grewal, and Colonel Patrick Callahan announced yesterday the release of the state’s first GUNStat Report, which provides the public with monthly and quarterly reports of gun-crime statistics. The report is now available to the public on the Office of the Attorney General and New Jersey State Police websites at http://www.njsp.org/njgunstat/

The comprehensive monthly report breaks down the number of guns recovered by county and city and additionally lists the type and caliber of gun, number of individuals arrested with more than one crime gun, total crime guns recovered, and a breakdown of shooting victims. The report will also identify the source states of crime guns. 77% of guns used in crimes committed in New Jersey come from other states. The GUNStat Quarterly report lists the top 15 “source states” from where these guns originate.
