Mental Health Concerns for New Parents

For Mothers

Perinatal mood disorders (PMD) are treatable, but many women wait too long to get help, or never seek treatment.  Up to 80 percent of new mothers experience some form of baby blues, feelings which gradually diminish.  When feelings of sadness persist more than a few weeks, it is time to reach out for help.  More about PMD.

In New Jersey, help is available through the Maternal and Child Health Consortia (MCHC), three regional private, non-profit organizations that direct women with perinatal mood disorders to the appropriate level of care.  More information on the Consortia can be found on the MCHC page.
