Behavioral Health Integration Stakeholder Information
The Department of Human Services, Division of Medical Assistance and Health Services (DMAHS) submitted an application to the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services on February 28, 2022 to renew the New Jersey FamilyCare Comprehensive Demonstration. This demonstration, authorized under Section 1115 of the Social Security Act, governs the operations of significant components of New Jersey’s Medicaid program and Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP). The application was approved on March 30, 2023.
The Section 1115 Comprehensive Demonstration gives New Jersey authority to operate and innovate in important ways. One important component of NJ's 1115 Demonstration includes the integration of behavioral health services with medical services to allow the Medicaid managed care organizations to offer coverage and coordination of whole-person care. The Behavioral Health Integration (BHI) initiative involves a phased, multi-year approach involving robust stakeholder engagement.
